Licensing - Apply your Activation Key or .lic File

[Last updated 25/03/2023 JJS]

The Hexagon Geospatial Licensing Administration program is required to activate a concurrent (CC_) license file. Previously this program was installed with IMAGINE. However you now need to download and install the Geospatial Licensing Administration tool separately. It is important to install this before installing and running IMAGINE.

Instructions for downloading software can be found here: https://geospatial-insight.helpscoutdocs.com/article/24-how-to-download-your-software

If licensing a license server just install the license administrator, there is no need to also install IMAGINE.

Applying an Online License

Once you have your activation code (see https://geospatial-insight.helpscoutdocs.com/article/16-guide-to-the-licensing-portal) follow the steps below to licence your instance. Your code will look something like CC_1234-xxeb-1111-4bc0-bfyy-2222-r333-x444

  1. Run the Geospatial Licensing Administration program, as Administrator

  2. Click License > Activate Licenses

  3. Either Click Add to add a single activation key or click Browse File to add an xml license file of multiple keys.
  4. Enter your activation Key.  e.g CC_ xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

  5. Click OK, then Activate
  6. Click Close. There should be a new license source in in the left hand pane of the Geospatial License Administration tool. You can expand that to check your licenses.

Applying an Offline License

In order to create an offline license you will need the Composite ID of the machine. This can be found here:

Create the license in the licensing portal by checking the generate .lic based license files:

and then entering the Composite ID:

Once the offline license is created (it will be a .lic file) you can apply it here:

See Troubleshooting section below if there are any issues.

Activation on Client Machines

If licensing a client machine to a networked license server, you can activate the license without installing the Geospatial License Administration tool and following the steps below. Try to run IMAGINE, wait for the license dialogue which appears after the no license error, then add the license server's networked computer name into the concurrent box provided.

If this fails, download and install the license administrator and follow the steps below.

  1. View > Add concurrent License Source

  2. Enter the networked machine name of the license server or its IP address.
  3. You may need to open the appropriate ports: see https://geospatial-insight.helpscoutdocs.com/article/5-ports-and-firewalls

How to Activate a Server License for Multiple Client Machines

Please see the article here: https://supportsi.hexagon.com/help/s/article/How-to-deploy-the-name-of-the-license-server-to-multiple-client

Moving a License

You will need to deactivate the license on the currently licensed machine and then re-license on the new machine.

To deactivate:

  1. Open the Geospatial License Administration tool.
  2. License tab > Deactivate
  3. Check the Checkbox next to all licenses then click Return - Make a note of your activation ID numbers, as you will need these to reactivate.

You can now apply the activation codes to the new machine.

Troubleshooting

If you receive any errors while trying to activate your license, the first thing to do is close the Geospatial License Administration tool and then open it and try again. If that doesn't work, try the following steps until the license applies successfully

A healthy licence service looks like this:

When applying a license key and the key activates but no service shows (machine icon with no red cross) follow the steps below: NB: you must be running version 16.6.20.64 of the Geospatial License Administration tool or later, ideally 16.7.8.189:

  1. Open the Geospatial License Administration tool. Check that you have an activated license by going to  to License Management > Deactivate / Return License (s). There should be a license visible there. If not, you will need to activate a license by following the key activation procedures above.
  2. Go to Geospatial License Administration tool's License Sources > Add Concurrent License Source.

Provide your machine name in Computer Name field and click OK. Don't worry about waiting for the wheel to stop spinning and move to the next step.

  3. Run Service Management > Recreate Local License Source (it should place EmptyServer_.lic in C:\Users\Public\Intergraph\Licenses\Server).

You should now have a working license.

  4. If not, please remove all listed under License Sources by: Service Management > remove license source
  5. Now repeat Step 3

Firewall Issues

Occasionally the Windows Firewall or another antivirus blocks the license from serving. Follow these steps to allow your the licencing tools through the firewall. Then retry activating the licence.

Further Troubleshooting

If the steps above have not resolved the issue, please follow the steps below. Please ensure you are using the latest version of the Geospatial License Administration tools (v16.7.8.189 or above)

https://download.hexagongeospatial.com/downloads/other/geospatial-licensing-2022

Go to C:\Users\Public\Intergraph\Licenses\Server and remove any .lic files.

Go to C:\ProgramData\Intergraph\Licensing and remove INGRTS_LICENSE_PATH. (ProgramData is a hidden directory and you may have to copy/paste that path into Windows Explorer to find it).

Go to Geospatial License Administration tool's License Sources > Add Concurrent License Source.

Run Service Management > Recreate Local License Source (it should place EmptyServer_.lic in C:\Users\Public\Intergraph\Licenses\Server).

If you still do not have a working license, the final thing to try is restarting the licence service. Go into the Services application (you can search for this in Windows), scroll down to the item Intergraph Licensing Service, right click - Restart. Now retry activating your license Key in the Geospatial Licence Administration tool.
